Liverpool injury and team news: The expected line-up vs Southampton

Liverpool‘s form players Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk will return to the south coast to face their old club, Southampton, on Friday night in pursuit of three points and top spot in the Premier League table.

The Reds sit one point behind league leaders Manchester City with six matches remaining. Nine down on Pep Guardiola’s side on goal difference, they will need to make the most of their goalscoring opportunities in their remaining fixtures if they are to catch the Citizens.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has a near-full squad to pick his team from, and the German could see the match as an opportunity to rest some tired first-team players and rotate his side. Southampton, 16th in the Premier League table and not yet safe of relegation, are not a strong side theoretically. However, Ralph Hassenhuttl’s men have managed three wins in their past five league matches, and should not be underestimated.

Here is how Liverpool could line up against the Saints:

Virgil van Dijk was seen with ice on his ankle after the match against Spurs, but insisted he would be fine for upcoming fixtures. Jurgen Klopp made the same protests in press conference: “He trained normal, everything OK. Yesterday we only had the second recovery session but he was involved in that. He looks all OK.”

Joe Gomez has nearly fully recovered from his broken ankle, but Klopp has emphasised his fitness will need work before he is ready to play: “He has to work on his endurance, that’s how it is after a long time. I think Joe was out for 15 weeks, that is long.” Reports have circulated in the national media that he is included in the squad, but he remains unlikely to start.

With these factors in mind, Klopp may decide to put out the same backline he did against Spurs for stability’s sake, and Alisson will start between the sticks as usual.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, similar to Gomez, is lacking fitness after a long spell on the sidelines, so is unlikely to feature. Jordan Henderson had a somewhat patchy performance against Spurs, so Fabinho may replace him in the starting lineup, alongside Georginio Wijnaldum and James Milner.

Naby Keita could be another option for rotation’s sake, but given his poor form this season after a strong first few matches Klopp may prefer to stick with his preferred lineup.

Sadio Mane should start against his old club as the form attacker among Klopp’s front three. The other two, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, will likely join him. Although there is an argument to be made for the inclusion of the likes of Divock Origi, Daniel Sturridge, or Xherdan Shaqiri, Klopp tends to prioritise consistency over rotation and fresh legs.
