Liverpool's Naby Keita provides update on fitness ahead of AFCON

Naby Keita has this evening confirmed that he hopes to be available for Guinea’s African Nations opener with Madagascar next week.

Keita crocked

Liverpool midfielder Keita has been sidelined since the Reds’ 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Barcelona at the beginning of last month.
The 24-year-old subsequently missed Liverpool’s season run-in, including the club’s Champions League final victory over Tottenham.
After initially picking up his injury, Jurgen Klopp hinted that the all-action midfielder looked set to miss not only the remainder of the season, but also Guinea’s AFCON campaign:
‘It was really unlucky. Bad news. He has a high-grade Adductor injury. The tendon is ruptured, which keeps him out for at least two months.’
‘Bad news for us obviously, but bad news for Guinea as well because the Africa Cup of Nations is coming up.’

Guinea include Keita

After Klopp later went on to reveal that Keita was ‘ahead of schedule’ in his recovery, though, the dynamic midfielder was subsequently named in Paul Put’s AFCON squad:

‘To reassure the fans…’

And Keita has this evening provided the latest update on his return to fitness, confirming that, though he is not yet at ‘100 per cent’, he nevertheless hopes to be ready to lead Guinea into their tournament opener versus Madagascar on the 22nd of June.
Speaking in an interview with Foot 224the Elephants’ captain explained:
‘I’m going to work now. I am not 100 per cent but when I was in Liverpool, I started training with the ball.’
‘As I’m here now I’m going to train with the team to see.’
‘To reassure the Guinean fans, the coach and the team-mates, I think I’ll be ready for the first match.’
